On Friday I decided to start my journey with an early dinner at Old Salty's...There’s only so much one can do to add a new dimension to this traditional comfort food, however Old Salty's have managed to make the experience exciting, blog worth and sinfully delicious so here goes...
They have certainly gone with the traditional (and cozy) feel in terms of design; from the chalkboard menu, rustic dining area and weighty aroma of boiling fat. Greeted by a friendly waitress I am invited to take a seat by the window and am presented with an envelope style menu.
Certainly not stuck for choice, traditional with a selection of more restaurant style options including Tiger Prawn Skewers, Scallops, Calamari...oh! And a sneaky selection of wine and beers. Fridays certainly did just get better :-D
Sticking to tradition I ordered the Cod Supper: Light(ish) and Crispy Batter (although slightly on the oily side), Cod was nice and fleshy, Chips cooked just right mine doused in vinegar (personal preference). Side salad with mustard dressing was a nice touch and the homemade tartar sauce just mmmmm!
All in all I’d say Old Salty’s fits in with the hipster west end vibe while staying virtuous to the traditional chip shop experience. Menu is well priced considering their more upmarket approach and portions are very well sized.
They are pretty busy on weekend evenings so it can be a bit of a wait but it’s all the while worth it and your guaranteed to leave with a fully lined stomach.
